Should You Take Part in Camp NaNoWriMo?

If you follow writers on Instagram or Twitter, you have probably noticed them talk a lot about "Camp NaNoWriMo" (Camp NaNo for short) the last few months. And with Camp NaNo July just around the corner, we thought we would demystify what this month is all about to help you decide whether you should take part.

So, what is Camp NaNo?

Camp NaNo is an offshoot of NaNoWriMo, the annual National Novel Writing Month that happens every year in November. While the goal for NaNoWriMo is to write a 50,000 word novel in one month, Camp NaNo is much more flexible in the sense that you can set your own word count goal and can tackle any writing project, new or old, novel or not. Camp NaNo also takes place twice a year, in April and July.

How do you get involved?

Getting involved is simple. The first step is to create an account on the NaNoWriMo Website. If you already have an account, simply log in. Once you've signed up or logged in, you can create a new project or set a new goal for an existing project. The website will prompt you with a few questions about your project that you can fill in, including what your word count goal is, and then you'll be set to join in with other writers all around the world in July. All you have to do is log in every time you write and input what you worked on into your project. The website will do the tracking for you, letting you know your progress on meeting your goals. If you run into any issues with your project, there is also an easy "Help Desk" button where you can get answers to your questions.

Why get involved at all? You might be wondering what the big deal is, especially since you will see many writers (pantsers, plotters, and plantsers alike) getting involved over this next month. Well, there are a few reasons you might want to join in on the involvement.

1. A Supportive Writing Community

One of the most significant benefits of joining Camp NaNoWriMo is becoming part of a vibrant and encouraging writing community. Throughout the event, you'll connect with like-minded writers who understand the joys and challenges of the creative process. The online platform facilitates interactions, allowing you to join virtual cabins/forums, engage in discussions, and exchange ideas and experiences. The sense of camaraderie and support will keep you motivated, provide valuable feedback, and foster lasting connections with fellow writers. You can also find other participants by using hashtags on Instagram or Twitter such as #CampNaNoWriMo or #NaNoWriMo. Make sure visit the "Community" tab on the NaNoWriMo website to get the most of your community involvement.

2. Personalize and Achieve Writing Goals

Camp NaNoWriMo empowers writers to set personalized writing goals, making it a flexible and tailored experience. Whether you aspire to complete a full novel, revise an existing manuscript, or explore a new genre, the camp provides the perfect setting to pursue your unique writing aspirations. Unlike competitive programs, Camp NaNoWriMo emphasizes individual progress, encouraging you to challenge yourself while maintaining a healthy writing pace. The structured environment and word-count tracking tools keep you accountable and propel you towards achieving your writing dreams.

3. Access to Valuable Resources

Camp NaNoWriMo equips participants with a wealth of resources to enhance their writing skills and knowledge. The event's website offers writing prompts, articles on craft, webinars, and advice from accomplished authors. Additionally, the camp's community encourages knowledge sharing, allowing writers to exchange tips, techniques, and strategies to overcome challenges, develop characters, plot captivating stories, and refine writing style. Whether you're a seasoned writer or just beginning your literary journey, the resources available during Camp NaNoWriMo will nurture your growth and help you improve as a writer.

4. Embrace Creative Freedom and Exploration

Camp NaNoWriMo encourages participants to unleash their creativity and embrace new ideas without inhibition. Unlike the November edition of NaNoWriMo, which focuses on completing a 50,000-word novel, the camp allows writers to explore various projects, such as short stories, poetry collections, screenplays, or non-fiction works. This freedom enables you to experiment with different genres, writing techniques, and narrative styles, fostering growth as a versatile writer. The supportive environment and absence of rigid rules make Camp NaNoWriMo an ideal playground for creativity and exploration.

5. Find Motivation and Inspiration

Writing can often feel isolating, with self-doubt and creative blocks acting as hurdles. Camp NaNoWriMo injects a renewed sense of motivation and inspiration into your writing journey. The collective energy of the camp, coupled with the camaraderie within your cabin, keeps you engaged and motivated throughout the month. Daily writing sprints, virtual write-ins, and friendly challenges help combat procrastination and fuel your creativity. The sense of accomplishment upon reaching your personal writing goals, no matter how big or small, boosts your confidence and strengthens your commitment to your craft.

Conclusion:

Camp NaNoWriMo July 2023 offers an extraordinary opportunity for writers to embark on a transformative writing adventure. By joining this inspiring community, you'll benefit from support, resources, and connections. The event empowers you to create alongside other writers and accomplish goals in your writing career in a semi-structured approach. Camp NaNoWriMo can be useful for overcoming writer's block, burn out, and assist in motivating you toward your creative passions. While a structured writing environment may not be for everyone, we encourage you to give Camp NaNo a try if you've never done it before!
